About us
We built this because we needed it ourselves
BeActive was built inside BeFree, a services business running onshore and offshore delivery teams. We needed to explain our own hours to our own clients, could not do it credibly, and did not like any of the tools on the market enough to buy one.
The problem we had
Clients asked reasonable questions. How many hours went into this account last month? Was the team fully staffed on the shifts we are paying for? Why did that piece of work take three weeks?
We had rostered hours, invoices and a spreadsheet a team leader maintained by hand. What we did not have was a record of the actual working day — and every answer we gave was, honestly, an educated guess dressed up as a number.
The tools we trialled fell into two camps. Simple project timers that required everyone to remember to press a button, which nobody reliably does. Or surveillance products built around screenshots and keystroke logs, which we were not willing to put on our own team's machines.
So we built the thing we wanted: automatic measurement of the whole day, including time away from the keyboard, with every employee able to see exactly what their manager sees.
Still our own first customer
BeFree's delivery teams run on BeActive every day. Every feature on this site is one we use ourselves, which is the main reason the roadmap is short and the feature list is not padded.
How we build
Four things we decided early and have not moved on
Limits, not settings
The four below are constraints on what the product can do, not switches an administrator can flip. That distinction is the whole argument: a capability that exists will eventually be used, whatever the policy around it says.
It is the same instinct behind the artwork on this site. There is no stock photography of smiling office workers here and no borrowed dashboard screenshots — every graphic is drawn from our own geometry, so we can account for all of it.
The employee sees everything
Not a configurable option. Every person gets the same day view their manager sees, and the agent shows a visible indicator whenever it is running. A tool that can be run covertly eventually will be.
Collect the minimum that answers the question
Application names, not window contents. Domains, not URLs. That input happened, not what was typed. Every additional field is a liability for you as much as for us.
Measure teams, not individuals
Individual data exists because attendance and timesheets need it. But activity is not output, and we will argue with any customer who wants to build a performance ranking from it.
Say no to the features we should not build
Keystroke content capture, webcam access, private message reading, covert mode. All requested. All declined. That is a deliberate limit on our own addressable market.
Where we are
BeActive is a product of BeFree, headquartered in Sydney with delivery teams across Australia and the Philippines. Being in both an Australian head office and an offshore delivery environment is why the shift, roster and multi-site features are as developed as they are — we needed them first.
