Privacy & ethics
Is employee monitoring legal?
In most jurisdictions, monitoring work activity on company equipment during working hours is lawful when employees are informed. What varies is the notice and consent required. In Australia, state surveillance-devices legislation and the Privacy Act apply; in the EU, GDPR requires a lawful basis and usually a data protection impact assessment. We build for informed monitoring and provide the employee-facing transparency that most regimes expect, but this is not legal advice — check your obligations for the countries you employ in.
Does BeActive log keystrokes?
No. We record that input activity occurred, never what was typed. Keystroke content is not captured, stored or transmitted at any point, and there is no setting that turns it on.
Can employees see their own data?
Yes, and it is on by default. Every person gets the same day and week view their manager sees, and the desktop agent displays a visible indicator whenever tracking is active.
Do you take screenshots?
Only if an administrator explicitly enables the optional screenshot feature for a team, which is off by default. When enabled, employees are told, images can be blurred, and the capture interval is configurable.
Can we monitor outside working hours?
Tracking can be restricted to defined working hours and shifts, and we recommend doing so. A private mode also lets people exclude defined periods entirely.
What do you refuse to build?
Keystroke content capture, webcam access, private message reading, and covert monitoring that hides itself from the person being monitored. These have been asked for and declined.

How it works
How is BeActive installed?
A lightweight desktop agent for Windows and macOS, deployable manually or through your existing MDM or Group Policy. A typical team is live the same day.
What does the agent record?
Login and logout times, periods of input activity and inactivity, application names and website domains, and meeting status where a calendar is connected. Not page contents, keystrokes, message bodies or files.
Does it slow machines down?
The agent typically uses under one percent CPU and around 60MB of memory. It does not sit in the network path or hook into development tooling.
What happens when someone is offline?
Activity is buffered locally and synced when the connection returns, so intermittent connectivity does not create gaps in the record.
Does it work on Linux or mobile?
Windows and macOS are supported today. Linux is on the roadmap, and mobile is limited to a web view for managers and employees rather than tracking.
How long does rollout take?
Technically, hours. Practically, plan two to three weeks: announce it, explain the why, run one team first, then expand. Rollouts that fail almost always fail on communication, not installation.

Data & security
Where is our data stored?
In AWS, with Australian data residency available on Enterprise plans. Data is encrypted in transit with TLS 1.2 or higher and at rest with AES-256.
Who can see the data internally?
Access is role-scoped: employees see themselves, team leads see their team, administrators see the organisation. Our own staff access customer data only with a support request and an audit record.
How long is data retained?
By plan — 30 days on Starter, 12 months on Growth, unlimited on Business, and a custom retention policy on Enterprise. Deletion requests are honoured within 30 days.
Can we export everything?
Yes. CSV and Excel export from every view, plus a REST API. Your data remains yours and stays exportable through cancellation.
Do you have SOC 2 or ISO 27001?
We can share our current security documentation, penetration test summary and completed security questionnaires under NDA. Ask us directly for the current certification status rather than taking a marketing claim on trust.

Buying & support
How does pricing work?
Per active user per month, with four plans and a discount for annual billing. See the pricing page for the full comparison.
Is there a minimum contract?
No. Monthly plans are month to month and cancellable from the billing screen. Annual plans run for twelve months at the discounted rate.
What support is included?
Email support on all plans, priority support on Business, and a named account manager with an SLA on Enterprise.
Can you help us roll it out?
Yes. We provide an employee communication pack and a rollout checklist to every customer, and Enterprise plans include a scoped onboarding programme.
